Converting in only three steps
If you want to optimise images for the web, WEBP is now virtually unavoidable. Developed by Google, this file format combines the strengths of PNG and JPG, whilst outperforming both in terms of file size. Particularly when converting unoptimised PNG files, impressive results can be achieved. Google therefore consistently recommends its own format in its Lighthouse audits[1] and PageSpeed insights, and with good reason.
Why convert PNG to WebP?
PNG files offer lossless quality and transparency, but are often quite large. Whilst quantisation of PNG files can save a significant amount of file size, this is only very effective for graphics. When transparency is required in photographs, even optimised PNGs are often huge compared to JPGs. This is where WEBP comes into its own: just like PNG, WEBP supports an alpha channel for transparent backgrounds. Typically, such WEBP files are 25 to 35 per cent smaller than comparable PNGs, with virtually identical image quality.[2] When it comes to lossless compression, WebP achieves particularly good results compared to PNG.[3]
For website operators, this means: faster loading times, lower traffic and better Core Web Vitals. The LCP (Largest Contentful Paint) score benefits directly from smaller image files – and this is a direct ranking factor for Google.
Browser support for WebP files
Whilst WebP was initially only supported by Chrome and Opera, all major browsers have now (2026) followed suit. According to caniuse, global browser support stands at over 97 per cent.[5] Safari has supported WebP since version 14 (macOS Big Sur / iOS 14), Firefox since version 65, and Edge also displays WebP images without any issues.[3] Converting PNG to WebP is therefore perfectly feasible for modern web projects.
